The big dog isn’t biting on the New York City mayoral race.

Former President Bill Clinton, who officiated the marriage of New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner to Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to his wife Hillary, told CNN that he has five friends running for mayor and isn’t taking sides.

“The feelings I have are all personal, and since they are, I shouldn’t talk about them,” Clinton told CNN in a taped interview.

Many New York mayoral hopefuls, including one Republican in the campaign, were former Clinton supporters, either for Clinton’s presidential run or his wife’s campaign for Senate, he said.

"Neither Hillary or I was ever involved in the political campaign, and they [all] understood that from the beginning,” Clinton said.

After revelations that Weiner continued exchanging sexual text messages with women after his 2011 resignation from Congress, the Clintons have been repeatedly cited because of their proximity to Abedin — as well as Hillary Clinton’s political ties to New York and her husband’s sex scandals. The Clintons were reported to have been livid with comparisons between Hillary Clinton and Abedin, both of whom stuck by their spouses during scandals with multiple women.

Clinton was speaking in Rwanda to promote The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. That his comments reverberated thousands of miles away to the five boroughs is more pronounced in the context of a recently cited 1998 Washington Post style section story that proclaimed “Bill Clinton has essentially lost the Washington Establishment for good.”

That Washington Post story written by Sally Quinn was quoted by columnist Frank Rich in a New York Magazine critique of the corruption of America’s ruling class. Rich cited it as proof of an unmatched historical amnesia among the political class that permeates into the present day.

“This crowd is as intractable as it is incorrigible,” Frank concludes. “There are no term limits, because Washington amnesia perennially wipes the slate clean.”

Besides Weiner, other NYC mayoral candidates include City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former City Comptroller Bill Thompson, Public Advocate Bill de Blasiom  former City Councilman Sal Albanese, billionaire John Catsimatidis, and current Comptroller John Liu.

Service.
Whatever you think of President Obama, or of the American presidency itself, on many levels this is a strange use of a U.S. Marine.
To be clear: Presented with photographs showing a long and robust precedent, and establishing that many Presidents have enjoyed this same and particular service, I’d wager that most past and present grunts would say the same thing.
